    Carlos Whittaker - The Fight
Chances are that you know the Carlos Whittaker story already. You know about his time at Andy Stanley’s North Point community church, about that tattoo, that viral video and the People’s Choice Award. You know all about that blog which comes in just behind Piper and Driscoll in the top five charts and you know about the debut album with Integrity Music. We’re guessing you also know about the fact that for Carlos Whittaker, the prospect of a world without social media is, frankly, terrifying.
But none of all that is either the whole story or the bigger picture. And when it comes to the words and sounds of Carlos Whittaker, the whole story and bigger picture matter a lot.
In a journey that has taken him from the east coast to the deep south, Carlos has become something unique within the church. His favorite phrase is his calling card - to disturb and disrupt to see Christ’s face fresh again - and his voice sounds loud and clear.
“Perhaps my voice before was a little more cautious,” he explains. “But now that I’m not working in a church I can be more...” [pause] “...aggressive? I mean that I am better able to question the evangelical community. These days I can say the things that will get me into trouble and lose readers and commenters, but these are the things that matter - these are the things that are true.”
All of which is why we’re five paragraphs in to this micro-bio and we’re only just getting round to exploring the new music coming from Carlos Whittaker - namely, his sophomore album, due out with Provident in *MONTH*.
It was all so different with the debut album, Ragamuffin Soul. It was produced and largely co- written with producer-of-the-moment Jason Ingram, and Carlos had been signed up for the project even before the label had heard him sing. That meant there was a lot of ground to be covered - like finding a sound, a voice and honing a message - and it needed to happen fast.
But two years are a long time in the life of a social-mediarista like Carlos, and in between the then and the now he has joined the Paradigm family - home to the likes of John Mark MacMillan, All The Bright Lights and The Royal Royal - a brother partnership featuring Nathan ‘Producer-Of-A-Moment-Coming-Very-Soon’ Finochio.
“Nathan and I became friends before we became music partners.

“Nathan and I became friends before we became music partners. My kids love him and he knows me as a father, as a husband and as a friend. He sees my successes and my failures. So when we work together he produces and crafts in a whole different way. He gets my heartbeat.”
That heartbeat has a fresh sound. As an album, The Fight is full of electro beauty and genre- bending madness. Instead of heavily-delayed guitar parts, it favors a double swiss of keys, loops and all the rest. Why?
“People see me as this creative guy, and I don’t want to give them cookie-cutter worship music out of Nashville.”Yet, Carlos is never one to wander far from the path, and while he wants to disturb and disrupt, he only ever does it to encourage, not to alienate. That means that, in a concession to bemused guitar players everywhere, Carlos has recorded acoustic versions of all the songs.
Scrape away just a little at the surface of The Fight and you’ll unearth a message ripe with honesty, truth and the desire to bring people on. For halfway through creating the album, Carlos was forced to face some uncomfortable truths:
“Last year was hell. I was struggling in my marriage, I was struggling financially, I was struggling in my faith and I was losing it all. This is it, I thought. This is what it looks like to have to fight for your life.
“And as I looked around and saw so many others in the same position. Some friends of mine are in the fight of their lives for their careers, for their marriages, for their kids. I know of parents with ten year olds looking at porn. How did we even get here? And is there really any way out of here without a fight?”

Carlos speaks openly of his own struggle with anxiety and depression, how he’s been on Paxil for the last nine years and used to have panic attacks so strong that he was unable to stand up. And seeing some of those patterns begin to emerge in those he loved was a crushing blow:
“I started to see in my nine and ten year old the same things I struggle with - the anxiety and the depression. I started to lose it, and it was clear that after ten years of feeling like I had a handle on my anxiety and depression, that wasn’t so true any longer. My own stresses rose and I needed to up my Paxil dose. I have to look at it in a new way. I had to see it as a fight.”
The revelations came from other sources too:
“I looked at my Instagram feed and it was full of selfies, all calling out for people to leave comments that would boost my ego. I started to look around at others too, and I saw that so many of us just show the tip of the iceberg, just the perfect three minutes from an otherwise normal - and difficult - day. Nobody can ever achieve the type of perfection we see on those blogs, but we’re heading for disaster if we keep on trying. So now I find myself in a fight to be authentic.”
Slowly, gradually, and not without much self-doubt and questioning, the album re-emerged. New songs came, bringing a touch of hope where it was needed most.
“New Song’s first line kind of sums it all up for me: “I was dead and not breathing.” I explain it before I sing it at churches and I see how many people are suffocating like I was. But it doesn’t stay there - the fight doesn’t go on forever. The song bring hope as well: “You lifted me up out of the worst darkness.”
Carlos knows that not everyone is at their wits end, but it’s true that the fight will come - or has come - for every single one of us. None of us can escape the fight. Not a single one.

Just as he does with his blog, Carlos has a unique ability to help people open up and unleash the honesty. These songs are part of him, and so nobody should be surprised to learn that they have an agenda. Like a sheepdog let loose in the field, The Fight is a Spirit-scripted plan to drive us to the place where the fear loses its grip. The Fight comes out and finds us there among the mud and the blood, and it reminds us that one day - soon, we hope - we will get to rest a little in the arms of the One who knows what it is to fight for life - and win.

A Royal Idea.

My younger brother Gabe and I grew up in a pastors house which was also a musical house--our mum is an amazing singer/songwriter and our father as well--so worship music has always been a first love for us. Sure, like any pastors kids that have to tow the party line, we naturally played on the worship teams every sunday, eventually being mentored into leading worship. Unlike some PK's, we loved it, cuz we thought 'hey this gives us something fun to do', plus the gratification of serving at church.

Church never sucked for us. Ever. That was our parents doing. When dad was in sales in our early childhood, he was a worship leader at a vibrant charismatic church. It got crazy every Sunday at that church, but that's how us Finochio's like to roll, I guess. Our parents never chirped at the leadership, never complained about services: they didn't ruin church for us, so we grew up absolutely loving church and being heavily involved. Eventually our father took a pastorate in our mid teens, many years after he travelled full-time preaching and teaching on worship and spiritual gifting across North America. The church was very small at the time so we cut our teeth learning to lead there. That poor church. We really sucked back then!

Gabe and I headed off to Bible College for four years upon graduating high school, and started to write together out there. It was nothing serious, just songs that came out of our devotional life. I don't think there was ever any intent to write songs for congregations to sing until we met a good friend 2 years ago, Matt Crocker. Gabe and I had been discussing doing a brothers worship album, but for some reason we didn't have the drive or ambition to see it through. We were sort of tired of scared of what it would look like, and wondered if there would even be anyone crazy enough to want to listen to it. Matt really believed in us, encouraged us to do it, and even came to our house for a week to write with us and help kick-start it.

Over the course of a year we put together an album at a project studio my production partner David Kuwabara and I were doing all sorts of crazy records out of, and sent it to some friends that were worship leaders. They liked it and sent it to other friends, who sent it to other friends. The truth is, you probably know someone who got our record for free a year ago, even though it hasn't been RELEASED YET (ahem). Haha. Anyways, it's all good, and we made some friends along the way who love Jesus, His Church, and worship music if not more than we do, and decided to help us get this stuff out in a way that everyone can have access to it.

We don't know exactly what's next, we just keep writing worship music and leading and loving Jesus at this point. We'll probably be somewhere near you in the coming year as we hit the road to support our album.

Our prayer for you is that you connect with Jesus through these songs, that our song is clear and heard, and that you are inspired to sing your song. There is so much that we have to be thankful for and be creative about. This is our bread and loaves for Jesus, a representation of the most and the best of our life, almost everything we have come to know and practice in our walk with the Lord: music and family and church. This is also our small contribution to the worship conversation. More to come.

ATBL recent Interview with / Craig Boarlise and James Duke
Q: When I hear your music I'm reminded of a guy named Van Morrison - Ireland's equivalent of Bob Dylan, only without the return to form of recent years. Van's got this album from the 80s called 'Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart' and those five words are never far from my mind when I hear your music - or Sigur Ros's, Mum's or some of The Cure's stuff for that matter. But I'm aware that the mumbles that come from my heart are probably different to what you feel when you write/perform/record/hear your music. So... what's the inarticulate speech of your heart that these songs convey?

A: That's a great thought. The whole vision behind All The Bright Lights is that we would be able to do just that. Try to express what we feel in our hearts. I personally have never been really good at talking about my feelings, but when I pick up a guitar I've always been able to express the way I feel. I can play the things I don't know how to say. We are always looking for hope in our music. We are searching for peace with our music. We are praying for our family and our friends in our music.

Q: Without so may lyrics you have less control over what people experience in the songs. How does that sit with you?

A: Our goal is for people to be able to have their own experiences while listening to our music. We want the music to not only express the feelings in our hearts but give the listener the opportunity to do the same. We try to make a soundtrack for people to live their life.

Q: And what about worship? Is this album a Worship Album - or a worshipful album? Does any of that matter anyway?

A: I'd say we definitely write and record from a worshipful place. If a listener can find a reason to worship while listening, that is a beautiful thing.

Q: I have a feeling that you played with Jason Upton for a while. What did you learn from him?

A: I did. Jason is a great man. He's very caring and generous. He's very encouraging and supportive. Watching him with his family is a very beautiful thing. The relationship he has with his kids is inspiring. He's always available to his family when he's on the road. He taught me a lot about how to raise my own family. I learned a lot musically as well. He's got a great sense of melody and that was great to be around. I learned how to fill up a lot of space without really being in the forefront. Just reinforcing what he was doing. I learned how to support a song. Which is one of the most important to learn as a musician.

Q: And how do you see the church music today - are you optimistic about things or is there room for improvement? Are we getting close to Amos shouting 'away with the noise of our songs' or are we better than that?

A: I am optimistic that there is room for improvement!

Q: Can I ask about guitars too? I just bought a Strymon Timeline and I'm quite happy about that. But soon everyone's going to be making epic spacey weird-out sounds with vintage tones... so what's next?

I've got no clue. And that's what keeps me playing. It's amazing how an instrument with six strings can have endless possibilities. I've got some sounds in my head that I will try to make on the next record. I'm thinking it's time to break out my old chorus pedals and see what happens. I am going to pull my old pedal steel out from under my bed. Maybe unplug my delay pedals? CRAZY TALK!!! I love the process of finding sounds. I hope whatever it is that comes next makes us uncomfortable. I hope it pushes us further and makes us have to rethink everything.

Q: What's your musical influence family tree - which sounds and songs have shaped you?

A: Well, you know, The Edge is probably my biggest influence. I could go on and on about him. I love that guy. Achtung Baby turned 20 this year! That record is probably the most important record of my life. The Cure are right up there a well. I don't think there is a prettier intro to a song than Friday I'm In Love. Those first 8 notes are absolutely perfect. Robert Smith's melodies are always so beautiful and classic. They are so great at creating tension in music. Whether it's a happy song, sad song, angry song or Lovesong. (see what i did there?!?!) And nobody sings like Robert Smith. Elton John is another one like that for me. Ryan Adams is a huge Influence. I really love the early nineties. A lot. I did have a 3 month stint this year where all I listened to was the Gin Blossoms. That was fun. Oh, and I won't really unplug my Delay Pedals.

Q: Randoms now... What book are you reading these days?

I'm out on tour right now. I brought Dave Eggers "A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius" which is my favorite book, Anthony De Mello "The Way Of Love", a book of Psalms. I was also just given new Martin Smith book. I'm looking forward to reading that. Delirious changed my life.

Q: What's your position on hymns: best left in the past or can't get enough of them?

I love hymns. I think sometimes we can overlook the value in the old traditional songs. There is something to be said for singing a song that has been sung for so long. They've been floating in the air for lifetimes. Joining in to that is pretty powerful.

Q: Personally I can't get enough of the soundtrack to Monster's Ball. What's your optimum OST?

I remember driving to the record store with my sister when she bought the Singles soundtrack. She had this old white Volkswagen Beetle. She put the cassette in and Alice In Chains "Would" came on. That was my first time hearing it and it totally wrecked me. The big ending where Layne Staley screams "IF I COULD WOULD YOU"... My mind was blown. I sat there speechless for a second and finally said "I don't know who that is, but rewind it." I was probably 13. I bought the CD soon after. Of course Pearl Jam has two of their best on there with Breathe and State Of Love And Trust. Smashing Pumpkins, Paul Westerberg, Chris Cornell, Soundgarden, Jimi Hendrix... amazing soundtrack. That's the one for me.

"Raise your voice, chase away the ghosts." So begins the title track from John Mark McMillan's new release, Economy. A natural progression and a departure, McMillan's latest album has moved away from the themes of death and resurrection that clothed The Medicine to the interior psychology of a man trying to live in the uneasy valley between this world and the next, standing on the edge of the ocean of eternity, straining to see beyond the horizon line.

"For me, the greatest days—the birth of a child, the success of a career—have always been coupled with the worst ones—the death of a loved one, a friends' divorce," McMillan explains, "it's a tension we all live in."

On Economy, that tension is electric. From the first drumbeat of album opener "Sheet of Night" to the post-rock cacophony that closes out "Seen a Darkness," there is a palpable weight that permeates the entire project. This is Gospel music run through the filter of the Southern night; this is electrified folk—the music of a man who cut his teeth on Dylan and Kerouac and Springsteen all the while haunted by the presence of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. Economy is the sound of glory and shame, murder and grace, darkness and daylight and all those spaces in between. And it shows up in the songs—in the delicate beauty of "Love You Swore," in the rowdy drawl of "Daylight," and the quiet solemnity of "Murdered Son."

For those following McMillan's steady rise as an artist, Economy will not disappoint. Having grown as a lyricist and musician—this body of work finds the North Carolina-based artist at his most mature. And sonically, the album is far greater than the sum of its parts, served by the production team of Jeremy Griffith and Joel Khouri, and performed by the musicians that have supported McMillan across the world. The team has created a perfect accompaniment to McMillan's searching, searing vision of a world that is "not as it should be." But it's not just a broken world that McMillan's singing about. With Economy, he's pointing out across the horizon, across the waters, to the hope of something much more than the devil's "broken hearts and counterfeit currency."

"We have seen the night," John Mark sings, and then adds, "but we have seen the day."
